Jackie's Top 10 Album's of 2009

As the story goes, another year is drawing near its end. Frankly, I couldn't be more ready. 2009 is not going to be making my top 10 list of favorite years. Is it just me or did the stars just not seem aligned? (I'm a little too into Astrology sometimes). 2009 seemed to be the year of mortality, beginning with the untimely death of one of the greatest entertainers/artists of all-time and several other unusual events in popular culture and in in my personal life experiences too.
Though it wasn't all bad; I did turn 21 afterall. ; )

In light of the year's end, I perused my ITunes collection to compile a list of my Top 10 Favorite Albums of 2009:

10. The Decemberists-Hazards of Love

Anyone who knows me knows my undying love for this band. I did not listen to this record nearly as much as I would listen to their others but it had to make it on my list because they can truly do me no dirty. The album is MUCH more hard-rock infused than any of their previous stuff, but the storytelling element that Colin Meloy crafts so well is perfection on this album.

9. Jay-Z-The Blueprint 3

Have you been able to go anywhere without hearing this album blasting in the streets since its release 3 months ago (or in August when everyone copped the leak)? Well, me either. I had a brief internal conflict about putting this on the list because it just doesn't quite measure up to pretty much all of his older albums. BUT it had to go on because I find myself listening to it as much as the next person.

8. Metric-Fantasies

"Who would you rather be The Beatles or The Rolling Stones?" (The Beatles, duh) But on a serious note, Metric made an incredibly good, even more catchy Indie Pop/Electronic record in Fantasies. It had decent success too, and the band self-released it..labels really are becoming more obselete.

7. Grizzly Bear-Veckatimest

The sound on this album is all around amazing. Haunting and a little sad but listen to it while your alone and you'll see what I mean. (Especially, "Two Weeks, "Cheerleader," and "While You Wait For The Others")

6. Black Landlord- Addicted To Distraction

I was introduced to Black Landlord when I worked briefly at Ropeadope and one way or another I became attached to this album. A funky, brass-heavy, big band and Hip-hop fusion that we so much adore in our Philadelphia music roots. Totally underrated band.

5. Lady Gaga- Fame/Fame Monster

Where did this chick come from? She took 2009 by storm and popularized what a very good friend of mine coined as "manufactured avante garde." But this is about the music, and what a great Pop album Gaga put together..especially for partying. 0= )

4. Dirty Projectors- Bitte Orca
There isn't a song this summer that I listened to more than "Stillness is the Move." These guys/girls are so musically-gifted..it's ridiculous.

3. Yeah Yeah Yeahs- It's Blitz!
This album spawned a very different, more mainstream sound from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs but in all the right ways!

2. Lily Allen- It's Not Me, It's You
Three words: My celebrity BFF. (Well, in my eyes)!
"There's just one thing that's getting in the way,

Uhhhh right? Adore her.

1. Animal Collective-Merriweather Post Pavilion
Perfection. Need I say more?

Very honorable mentions do have to go to: Passion Pit, Diane Birch, Raekwon, Kid Cudi, Bat 4 Lashes, and Ida Maria.
I'll probably do my top 10 songs also, have a feeling it will include a lot more Hip-hop.

Bring on 2010.

Am I real late on this band?

Just began listening to their album Two Dancers which was released this year.
I especially enjoy the title track and the part II of the title track. There is some pretty impressive and interesting guitar-work throughout. I am not going crazy about the lead vocalist though. I feel as though he detracts from their overall sound, but it might need to grow on me.

The other day when I was furiously "running" clothes around my job, listening to the same songs they play time and time again on our station, I heard a cover of Animal Collective's-"My Girls." It's from Merriweather Post Pavilion, which is one of my favorite albums of the year so far.

Did a bit of research, it's by Taken By Trees-"My Boys"

PS. I guess this band has an affinity for cover songs because I also found this one of "Sweet Child O Mine." I approve.

I just now watched this documentary. I feel as though everyone has seen it, and I just never did. Not really sure. I have yet to watch it in its entirety but bits and pieces with a friend. She gave me a burned copy, and I plan to watch the whole thing and fully analyze it later.

It puts a lot into perspective about how Michael Jackson was.
I could sit here and ramble about all the of the things that he said for while probably..but I'm simultaneously watching the Phillies.

When I fall, I fall hard. This is rare in and of itself but naturally-- it can pose several problems in matters of the heart.
But in my musical soul; it doesn't.

What I mean is, I listened to Diane Birch for the first time today. It took me some 5 minutes to decide that I was already obsessed.

Her voice is fantastic, and she's gorgeous. Like a lovechild of Joni Mitchell, Cat Power, and Feist. Please do yourself a favor and get her album Bible Belt. So many beautiful harmonies, piano, and string sections. Love, love, love.

VMAS 2009

MTV is known for "random" things happening at the VMAS. This year was definitely a shitshow though. I couldn't stop laughing the entire time--from the horrible correspondents on the red carpet up until the end of the show.

Ye, you're a jerk. You probably should have waited an hour longer for Beyonce to win so that you didn't have to embarrass yourself on national television...again. When keepin' it real goes WRONG.

Lady Gaga is either completely genius or bat shit crazy. Can't really decide. Perhaps a little of both.

As expected Beyonce was on fire and surprisingly..so was Pink. Jay-Z and Alicia Keyes were a highlight at the end. Preforming practically the only song off of Blueprint 3 that I really love, "Empire State of Mind," that was until Lil' Mama jumped on stage with them. She's so corny.

Also, honorable mention to Wale--they put that guy in the corner but he was killin it throughout the whole show.

I have a hard time believing in the spontaneity of a lot of those moments because I've come to be quite critical of the media after studying it for the past 3 years. Are the VMAs just becoming a series of publicity stunts set up by both MTV and celebrity PR reps? What do you think?

In the 2nd week of my senior year, the class that is easily shaping up to be my favorite is CD Project Management. I'm sure you can imagine why, but it's basically the ins and outs of the recording industry and the job of a record producer.

Our first pseudo-assignment was to pick two top ten lists. The first being that if you were to be trapped on a desert island and could only bring 10 albums what would they be and 2nd being 10 albums that you admire the production on.

Thought I would post mine. I'm probably one of the most indecisive people I know, so naturally, I edited and re-edited multiple times. And I like lists, but I hate ordered ones so..I'm not numbering these. I mean, do you rate your shit?
Haha, funny how literally I take assignments like these ones that aren't even graded.

After a less than brief hiatus, I've decided to start blogging again. My sometimes overactive social life and and a bit of newly 21 year old overindulgence this past summer has PARTIALLY prevented me from accomplishing certain things. No judgement.

However, I am graduating next May! (I've yet to grasp the feelings I have on this forthcoming commencement).
...anyway, I'm getting focused again, which includes doing little things that I enjoy/motivate me, this being one in them.

So, I am presenting another band to you from Ropeadope--yes that's two in a row, I'm soliciting my awesome job.
And it's NOT garbage either. So don't be a hater!

Anyway, here's Carlon (I'm personally doing "in-house" for the band):
They released their full-length LPJohari Window mid-last month, and it's a really great and underrated album (thus far).

To me it sounds like it has influences of Fleet Foxes and Tom Waits, Kings of Leon, and Radiohead--And you can definitely hear The Beatles references throughout. And even that's a long shot. They don't really sound like anyone in particular and different all the time, but the album flows so nicely. They're super original, not your basic indie rock band.
Carlon is a quartet of dude friends haling from New Jersey who made the whole album in they're own 20,000 square-foot warehouse studio. This apparently helped them with the writing process of Johari Window, giving it a personal feel. I think it shows; the album can get kind of emotional at times--in a good way though. A way we can all relate to.

I'll probably talk about them on here quite a bit because I'm in charge of getting these guys the press they deserve. They're talented. Let me know whatcha think. Any suggestions on how I should promote them, too?

There is this pretty great band at Ropeadope where I recently started working (haven't done too much there yet but ya know). Everyone at Ropeadope is super psyched on them.

They're called Black Landlord and the album "Addicted to Distraction" just dropped yesterday, and it's f****** great music. Representin' the Illadelph! I was able to grab a free copy of it. You can compare them to the legendary Roots crew a bit (ya know, substance rap over a band with a soul/funk vibe). Only they're a little more big-band and just different. The main guys Maxx raps super clearly; you can understand everything he says. Actually, I think they're set to play at The Roots Picnic, as well (I'll be thurrr). My boss told me they were already, after I suggested we try and get them on that show. Apparently, really decently good and funny guys, too. Highly recommended by yours truly.

I went to a crazy show/party last night. It was at a show-house in West Philly up on 50th and Baltimore or somewhere close.
I hadn't been to an infamous West Philly house show since I was with my ex-boyfriend. We used to frequent Be Happy House and a few others for basement shows, and they were always good times. They were really his friends so I never felt too comfortable going back to them after things ended.

Anyway, the Danger Danger Gallery was insane last night. It's a newer house, apparently. If I'm being frank, straight-up hipster, but not in a bad way. Kevin drove with a few friends and we went up there. We were originally going because we got inviited by a super chill girl we met outside of The Institute bar (after a failed effort to get into the Diplo/Boyz Noise show last week). She ended up not being able to make it, but it was complete with 40s and dancin' on stage. That shit was seriously good times..and on a Sunday. I like running into random surprising new places in this city I call home.

My take on The Decemberists'-Hazards of Love

I'll give a little forward:
So, The Decemberists have been one of my favorite bands for years now. I believe that my infatuation with the band began back in junior year of high school. Quite a few of my very close friends share in this love as well.
There's something about the way I feel when listening to them. I suppose, that's the whole point of music in the first place, but it's special with this band. Lead singer/song-writer of the band, Colin Meloy, was a novelist before starting The Decemberists and has a undeniably descriptive way with words. I suppose it coincides with my fondness of Hemingway, as well.
It's not a simple task for me to truly express it into words, but I can kind of paint a picture...
It's like..Hmm okay, I'm sitting legs dangling over a large cliff with roaring seas crashing into it, likely somewhere on the British countryside--probably a century (maybe even two) back in time. Either that, or I'm permanently placed in an old movie or a musical--like, Oliver.
...And that, in short, is where my mind places itself when I'm listening to The Decemberists.

Well, I purchased the pre-release of their new album Hazards of Love a few days back.
Since it was nice out this afternoon, I decided to drive around the city aimlessly with my windows down. I figured it would be the perfect time to give the album a full listen through.
Blew my mind. It is a whole lot more progressive rock than what I am used to hearing from them. Or I mean, there are pretty heavy guitar riffs throughout (Blah, I'm not a fan of explaining genres).
I read that Colin Meloy had intended for it to be a "rock-opera"--to possibly be turned into a musical. I'm not sure whether or not that will happen, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did someday. I also read that he may be planning to play the album through when they go on tour, which I also think is a smart decision. It functions as a story, like some of their previous work, but Hazards of Love truly does. It's a mythical journey mostly centered around a character named Margret. It also has a fair amount of heavy female vocals on it, they put the singers from both My Brightest Diamond and Lavender Diamond on some of the tracks.
It may be a step in a different direction for one of my favorite bands, but truth be told, they can do no real wrong in my eyes. It's definitely not an album you skip around, I'm certain it was absolutely intended to be listened to in its entirety. Please buy it.

How come I didn't know about this?
While it is easy for all of us to find movies for free online, much of the time the quality of the picture/sound/etc. is so horrible.

Well, last night my friend Kylene showed me that you can rent them at Amazon.com for $2.99 and have them for 7 days. It's cheaper than a movie store and they has a pretty decent catalog. It's also better than Itunes in that respect. I believe they charge $3.99, and I don't think you can hold them for 7 days.

Try it out.

I apologize for my recent blogging ventures and constantly posting music videos. Truth is, I don't even really love music videos that much. Seems that today, they can really enhance a song or annihilate it.
This is the new Kanye video featuring Kid Cudi for "Welcome To Heartbreak." I dig it.

Lykke Li at the First Unitarian Church

I haven't yet had a chance to comment on seeing Lykke Li last Friday at the Church here in Philly. While I would like to say it's because I have been super busy, the actual truth is that I was waiting for a video to surface. I wanted to give a better representation.

It was amazing. I knew that it would be, but she surpassed my expectations. At the last minute, r5 decided to put the show in the Sanctuary of the actual church, rather than in the basement. I'm very glad they made that decision. The candles and the dark room and some silence made it a very different show..not to mention the sound is so great in there. Drinking wine out of a water bottle while my friends were drinking beers and Lykke Li was yelling, "What the fuck? It's so quiet in here!" telling everyone to start dancing in her oh, so adorable Swedish accent. It's a good thing the Unitarian church is accepting. Haha.
Her voice is so unique and pretty.
I think my favorite was when she performed "Tonight" during her encore. The entire room was damn near silent. She also jammed out to a cover of Tribe Called Quest's "Can I Kick It" last (Yeah, I know..whaaat?!)
She's so great; I'm kind of infatuated.

I just purchased this movie and watched it tonight. Along with six other DVDs, that I impulsively purchased at Walmart. I swear, I hate Walmart with a passion, but every time I go there, I feel like I need to buy something because it's so damn cheap. I guess that's where those nasty corporate bastards get you. Anyway, I didn't really mean to start going off on a Walmart tangent..

But it was the second time I've watched PS. I Love you, and it was just as good the second time. It makes me want a sexy Irish singer. I also love that some of it is set in Ireland. What a wonderful place. I would give a lot to go there again for longer.

I am dying over here. Finally, I got my hands on a new song from the genius that is Sufjan Stevens. It still has him "written" all over it with all of the horns, but it is kind of electro, too, like on Enjoy Your Rabbit. It picks up in the middle and than calms with a loungey piano solo and ends with a trippy electro sound. 10 minutes of heaven, I can't get over it.
It's something I would definitely put on a mix for a love (If I had one, of course).

I think I am going to have the easiest semester in history. I have no idea how I pulled this off, but I have only two classes Monday and one Wednesday. I'm only on Main campus Monday and Center City Wednesday night. I have one online class.

Oh, and I also got an internship today. It's at a little independent record label called Lost Gold Records, and their sister site is called DMusic.com. It's located up in Elkins Park. The company purveys rare music, like old classics from the vaults and shit. Should be pretty chill considering the girl who interviewed me was wearing Converse (I was in heels, of course, I had to purchase a new outfit) and there is a dog running around the office. So we'll see.

Today is the day. He is exactly what this country needs right now, and I feel like the majority is on his side, despite whether or not they voted for him in the election. Honestly, it's kind of difficult for me to effectively express into words just how thrilled I am at the moment. Though I am sure you know, because I bet that many of you are feeling the same way.

Oh my goodness! They are turning this classic Maurice Sendak book into a film!
Honestly, I used to read this all the time when I was a kid. I was even in a play at the Strawberry festival in Wilkes Barre area that my aunt directed.
Needless to say, I have a soft spot.

It's set to release in October 2009. Neato.

I got all four of my wisdom teeth pulled this morning and was extremely miserable. I started tearing up in the chair--I think the combination of laughing gas, anthesia, and the needle they put in my arm made me emotional. (I know, I'm such a girl). Surprisingly enough, I don't feel that badly now nor do I look like a chipmunk.
I can't imagine not being back in commission by tomorrow or Thursday at the latest. Let's hope.
I haven't moved from the couch all day. I have watched three movies so far and downloaded/bought a bunch of new music.

...most importantly, the 9th release from Animal Collective titled, Merriweather Post Pavilion. I just found it and have been listening to it throughout the day (in between movies and naps), and it is so great. Honestly, I've always enjoyed the band but haven't listened to them as much as I would like.
Like with many experimental bands, it often takes time and a few through listens to appreciate it entirely. With this album..I liked it immediately; it didn't even have to grow on me. My favorites are "My Girls" and "Brother Sport." You should have this in your life (!!!)

Where is this man? I was listening to Come On Feel The Illinoise! earlier, and I guess that's what had reminded me of how much I love him. Likely the best live show I've ever been to. He's so magical.
Is he working on a new album yet? I can't really find anything about it..though I didn't look very far. Wikipedia didn't say anything though. haha. That's often one my first go-to's for info like that. Perhaps not the best of ideas all the time.

I hope everyone had a great couple of days. I know I did.
I was a total Scrooge a couple of days prior when usually I'm a really big dork about Christmas. I guess I hadn't had time to get into the "spirit" because I was so busy.

So, I received a dope leather jacket, some black leather boots, a new I-trip, seasons of Sex and the City, money, etc, etc. Santa always pulls through! LOL.
Oh, and my brother, sister, and I got a Wii to share. So that was neat.

Starting tomorrow I have to go back and dive into corporate retail, while everyone returns and shops for serious discounts. It won't be so bad though. Let me know if anyone is going to be in the city.

I never sleep. At least there's a reason for it at this moment.
I am definitely still at the tech center on campus though. There is no sense in going back to my apartment now. So, I think I'm just gonna hang out here until my 9 am final, and then I'll take my ass home and pass out after it's over.

I thought I would post something though. A few weeks ago, I wrote a research paper for the Cybermedia online class I'm taking. It was about blogging and how it's altering current media. So, considering the circumstances, I thought I would post it. Maybe someone might have an interest in reading it. Let me know what you think.

Lily Allen is pretty fucking awesome. I was hoping to run into her (by that, I mean party with her) while I was in London this summer. We went to this underground club called YoYo one night that her ex-boyfriend Seb Chew DJ's at, who apparently she still sees often, according to the British newspapers we read when there. Alas, no Lily though.
This is all irrelevant to my original point that she did an acoustic cover of Britney Spears "Womanizer," and it's super cute.

I am currently obsessing over the new Common album, Universal Mind Control. I think it received alot of mixed reviews, but I love the electronic feel. There are only like 4 songs that I really love but still.
Also, Common has a much better and less vulgar way of describing sex (which he does A LOT of) too. I can appreciate as a female.

One of my best friend's Danni just texted me saying that the girl from Gossip, aka Beth, was just on MTV. She texted reminding me of when we saw them open for Mates of State at the Starlight Ballroom a few years back. That night we had talked to her in the bathroom & she was so sweet. We even let her jump in front of us in line because she was playing next.

Anyway, I just felt like this girl needs to be commended for being so comfortable with herself. It's inspirational. If only I had half of the guts & self-esteem that this girl does.
Plus, she's still totally bad ass.

Slumdog Millionaire

I have not been to the movies in a long time. I think the last time was to see "Sex & the City", wow.
But a girl in one of my classes was talking to me about "Slumdog Millionaire;" she has an internship with Allied who did PR for the film in Philly. It's a Danny Boyle film (he did Trainspotting & 28 Days Later).
Apparently, it has a decent soundtrack too, a couple of M.I.A. tracks and what not.
I want to see it! Go with me!

PS. For shits & giggles, this cartoon is hilarious and perhaps a little too true in some circumstances.

I downloaded this Tapemasters INC. mixtape a few days ago. I can't remember where exactly I got it so I can't post it.

It might not be worth trying to find if you already have like every Kanye West track on your ITunes though it has a whole lot of remixes from both Kanye & Andre 3000. So, it's kinda sweet.

My future?

Okay. As many of my friends & family know, I have been very conflicted about my career goals post graduation.
Well, I've been studying the media for almost 3 years now, and I thoroughly enjoy it. ALL aspects. From learning about its effects on our society to production and beyond.
I've gone back and forth countless times in my mind about what exactly I'm going to do with this Broadcasting, Telecommunications, and Mass Media major (or better known in the Temple world as BTMM). Naturally, my parents have been up my ass about it too.

Well, I think I've finally decided the direction I want to go.
Music makes my world go round & money makes the world go round, if we're being frank.
So, I definitely feel that I want to do something involving music. I can't avoid it; it's too influential on my sanity.
Also, I am thinking I want to get involved in a new media outlet (this is now an older term but w/e). In primarily web-based companies, as we are seeing today with blogging, podcasts, etc this is the most progressive form. At least in my opinion. So maybe getting involved in something like a web-based blog or magazine/independent record label/street apparel type of company. I don't know.

But along these lines is what I am ultimately thinking, and I feel pretty good about it.

Either way, I am going to keep my options wide open, because who really knows where the future is going to take me..or anyone.

Parking Wars

Much like many Philadelphians, I have a passionate dislike for the Philadelphia Parking Authority. I used to be understanding about this, but I can no longer comply.

$51 ticket today for parking, on my own block, of which I pay to live on. I will never understand this. (Did I mention that I just paid one off?)
It is no wondering that this organization has a reality show on A&E surrounding it. In other words, The PPA must really be THAT corrupt & just outright ridiculous for there to be a show on television about parking.
Um..yeah.

Someone give me something to be cheerful about today. It would be greatly appreciated.

I need to start keeping up with this thing.
I'll start with the positive (I mean, after all, my blog is called Gotta Stay Positive am I right?), the two things of which I discussed two posts prior to this one..happened.
The Phillies won the World Series in 2008. It was so much fun to be a Philadelphia resident during this madness, but much more importantly of the two...

Barack Hussein Obama became the 44th President-elect of the United States.
I have not been able to say this very often, but I was really and truly proud to be an American on October 4th. This change is so needed in our country, and it's such an accomplishment to see an African-American man in the highest of offices. Amazing. I hope that he gets something done in there. The country is rooting for ya, Barack.

Can you believe this man is going to be our President though? Wow, he's so f'ing cool.

On a negative note:
After we thought we were going in a direction towards diversity and equal rights post- election, the California Proposition 8 ballot was amended towards their state Constitution. In turn it eliminated the right for same-sex couples to marry.
I could probably rant and ramble about how unfortunate & unfair this vote is. It makes me so very very sad. However, I don't really feel like doing that because I am already not in the most pleasant of moods at the moment. So, I'll let this guy do the talking instead:

Philadelphia is all a buzz right now! The streets are filled with excitement and anxiousness more than likely because of two major events: The Philadelphia Philles and the upcoming 2008 Presidential election.

Tonight they could take the series, after a very irritating rain delay on Monday. 3 innings left until a possible win! SO EXCITING!!!!! (Admittingly, I'm not a huge sports fan, and I've only ever been to a few Philles games but whatever!)

SHE IS SO BEAUTIFUL.

So, one of my most favoritest ladies of the music world, miss Jenny Lewis' (of Rilo Kiley) new solo album releases tomorrow! She has been an icon of mine since early high school both musically and fashion-wise. I've seen her live 3 times, twice with Rilo Kiley and once for her first solo album at the Sanctuary of the Church. Lucky for me, I get paid so that will definitely be purchased by Wednesday. It's called 'Acid Tongue' and I've heard the title track, and I really and truly love it. I hope this is as great as her first solo album.

Hey, I'm Jackie. I'm a student at Temple University majoring in Broadcast, Telecommunications and Mass Media.

So, I decided to jump aboard the blogging phenomena. I had been meaning to start one for a while but never got it going. So, here it is. Let's see if I keep up with it. Shall we?
